Privacy Policy

Workup is a privacy-first New Zealand fishing app: marine conditions, a personal catch journal, fishing spots, bite-time calendars, maps, and an angler community. This policy explains exactly what the app collects, how it's stored, and the choices you have.

Who we are

Workup ("we", "us", "the app") is operated from New Zealand. For any privacy question or request — including deleting your data — contact us at workupfishing@gmail.com.

Our approach

Workup is built privacy-first. Your fishing spots and catch locations are private by default. We do not sell your personal data, we do not show third-party advertising, and we do not use AI to profile you. We collect the minimum needed to make the app work.

What we collect

Account

By default you don't give us an email, name, or password. When the app first connects it creates an anonymous account — a random identifier that lets your data sync and lets the community know which posts are yours. We do not collect your real identity.

You can optionally add an email address to secure your account, so you can recover your data if you reinstall the app or switch phones. If you do, we verify it with a one-time 6-digit code — there is no password. Your email is used only to let you sign in and recover your account; never for marketing or advertising.

Location

• Your device's GPS location, used to centre the map on you, drop and save fishing spots, measure distance/bearing to spots, and — only if you choose — tag a catch with where it happened.
• Location is used while you are using the app. We do not track your location in the background.

Content you create

• Fishing spots, catch records (species, size, notes, time), photos you attach, gear/tackle setups, and trip plans.
• If you use the community: posts (fish cards), comments, likes, who you follow, and direct messages.

Device data

• An optional reading from your device's barometric pressure sensor, used to show a local pressure trend.
• Basic information needed to deliver and secure the service. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.

How we use your information

• To provide the app's features (logbook, map, conditions, calendars, community).
• To sync your spots and catches to your account so they're not lost.
• If you add an email, to send a one-time sign-in code so you can recover your account on a new device.
• To keep the service secure and working.

Your spots & location privacy

• Your saved spots and catch locations are private to your account by default and are never shown to other users unless you deliberately share them.
• When you share a catch to the community, location sharing defaults to OFF (Private) every time. To include a location you must turn it on for that share and choose one of:
  • Region-fuzzed (recommended) — an approximate area (~11 km), never your exact mark.
  • Exact — the precise location. Only for places you're happy to share publicly.
• Community "sightings" store only a coarse, grid-snapped location — never your exact position.
• We never put GPS coordinates into shareable links or URLs.

Community & messages

• Posts you choose to share are visible to other Workup users, shown under your chosen handle (not your real name).
• Photos you post to the community are stored in a public area so they can appear in the feed. Photos attached to your private spots and catches are kept private to your account.
• Direct messages are visible only to you and the person you're messaging.
• Please don't post anything — including precise locations — that you wouldn't want to be public.

Where your data is stored, and who processes it

We use a small number of providers to run the app. They process data only to provide their service to us — not for their own marketing:

• Supabase — our secure database, sign-in, and photo storage. Your spots, catches and private photos are stored with per-user access controls; community posts/photos are stored in a public area by your choice.
• Expo / EAS — app delivery and over-the-air updates.
• Weather, tide & chart providers — to show forecasts, tides, charts and depths, we send approximate coordinates (a map point or spot) — via our own servers where possible — to providers including MetService, NIWA (tides & UV), Open-Meteo (marine data), Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) (charts) and GEBCO (sea depths). We do not send these providers your identity or your account.

Your data is stored on your device and in our Supabase backend. Some providers may process data outside New Zealand. We take reasonable steps to keep your data secure. We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.

Your rights (NZ Privacy Act 2020)

Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you can:

• Access the personal information we hold about you.
• Export your logbook — the app can export your catches and their conditions as a CSV file from within the app (Journal → export).
• Correct your information.
• Delete your data — see below.

Deleting your data or account

• You can delete individual spots, catches, community posts and comments directly in the app at any time.
• To delete your entire account and all associated data, email workupfishing@gmail.com and we will erase it.
• You can also turn off location permission in your device settings at any time (some map features will be limited).

Offline use

Workup is offline-first. Spots, catches and cached conditions are stored on your device so the app works without signal, and sync when you reconnect.

Children

Workup is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. We'll post the new version on this page and update the "Last updated" date above.
